Marvel’s Kevin Feige Throws The Hammer Down, Presumably So That A New Thor Can Pick It Up

Marvel is wrapping up its “Phase 2” with next month’s release of Ant-Man. With a baker’s dozen of films under its belt, some of its long standing contractual relationships with key actors are also in their eleventh hour. While this by no means is an indication that some of the actors portraying Marvel’s famed heroes are going to hang up their tights, this is certainly something that Marvel big-wig Kevin Feige (I’m rhyming and I’m not even trying!) has reflected on. When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Feige has conceded that, although Marvel has all of the key players locked in to the films Marvel has currently mapped out, (extending until the conclusion of “Phase 3” with Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 and Inhumans) he is completely willing to recast some of the heroes if necessary.

“But one day, it will be a combination. It will be a combination of choosing which characters to continue on with and explore and which to bring in, as we’re doing with Captain Marvel and Black Panther. And certainly to recast in some way or another – as we’ve already done in certain cases. Certainly many other franchises have reached that milestone before we have and done that with great success.”

What remains unclear, however, is whether Feige is more interested in the possibility of recasting the Avenger, or the actor portraying the character. While there have been rumours of Chris Evans’ leaving the role of Captain America (and the industry as a whole) once his contract with Marvel is up, it remains to be seen whether Marvel will look for another actor to fill Steve Rogers’ boots, or if the shield will be handed off to an existing character such as Bucky Barnes or Sam Wilson? Keeping the audience on-board with the change of guard may be ideal, and Marvel has certainly set a precedent that it is not afraid to shake things up a bit.

It’s also possible that we’ll see some of the familiar faces bow out of the MCU, to make room for emerging, fresher heroes.  We’ll just have to wait and see how new, and how different the MCU is willing to go.
